Light Therapy 101: Choosing the Right Light for Healthy, Glowing Skin
Light therapy has become one of the most popular treatments in skincare, and for good reason. Backed by decades of research, specific wavelengths of light can help reduce inflammation, stimulate collagen production, improve acne, speed healing, and support healthier skin—all without downtime.
Not all light is created equal, though. Different colors target different concerns, and the quality of the device matters just as much as the color of the light itself.
Red Light (630–660 nm): The All-Around Favorite
If I could recommend just one color of light therapy for most people, it would be red light.
Red light works by stimulating your cells’ mitochondria, often called the “powerhouses” of the cell. This helps your skin produce more energy, allowing it to repair itself more efficiently.
Benefits of red light include:
Supports collagen and elastin production
Helps reduce inflammation
Speeds healing after procedures
Improves skin texture and tone
Softens the appearance of fine lines
Helps calm redness and irritation
One of my favorite things about red light is that the benefits build over time. You may not notice dramatic changes after a single session, but consistent treatments can lead to healthier, stronger, more resilient skin.
That’s why red light therapy is included with almost every treatment at GloWild. It’s an easy way to support your skin’s natural healing process and enhance your treatment results.
Green Light (520–540 nm): Best for calm and bright skin
Green light is actually one of my personal favorites. While it isn’t discussed as often as red or blue light, I love incorporating it because of its calming effects and its potential to create a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
Emerging research suggests green light may:
Help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation
Calm visible redness
Promote a more even skin tone
Reduce the appearance of sun damage
Support a brighter complexion
Although research on green light is still growing, I think it has exciting potential—especially when combined with red light as part of a comprehensive skincare routine.
Blue Light (405–470 nm): Best for Acne
Blue light is best known for treating acne because it targets Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria involved in acne breakouts.
Benefits include:
Helps reduce acne-causing bacteria
Decreases inflammatory breakouts
May reduce oil production in some individuals
A non-invasive option for acne management
The downside? Blue light is very targeted. If acne isn’t your primary concern, it’s probably not the color you’ll reach for most often. Excessive or overly aggressive blue light exposure may contribute to oxidative stress, which is why many providers combine it with red light to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
Near-Infrared Light (810–850 nm): Looking Beneath the Surface
Near-infrared (NIR) light penetrates deeper than visible red light, reaching tissues beneath the skin.
Potential benefits include:
Supports tissue repair
Helps reduce inflammation
May improve circulation
Can help relieve muscle soreness and joint discomfort
Complements red light therapy for overall healing
One important consideration is heat. If you have melasma or are prone to hyperpigmentation, be cautious with devices that generate significant heat. Heat is a well-known trigger for melasma, and some high-powered infrared devices can become quite warm. Quality LED-based near-infrared systems typically produce much less heat, but it’s still something to discuss with your skincare provider if pigmentation is one of your concerns.
Does the Device Matter?
Absolutely.
Many inexpensive light therapy devices simply don’t deliver the wavelengths or power needed to produce meaningful results. Others may not have been tested for consistency or safety.
When shopping for a device, look for:
Clinically studied wavelengths
Powerful, high-quality LEDs capable of delivering an effective dose of light
Sufficient light intensity (irradiance)
FDA-cleared devices when appropriate
Reputable manufacturers that publish their wavelength and irradiance specifications
Comfortable, convenient treatment times
Remember, the correct wavelength is more important than the number of LEDs. A device with hundreds of inexpensive LEDs isn’t necessarily better than one with fewer, high-quality LEDs delivering clinically studied wavelengths at the proper intensity.
One of the companies I trust most for home light therapy is Lumara. Their devices are designed with clinically relevant wavelengths, packed tight with powerful, high-quality LEDs, and thoughtful engineering, allowing many users to complete a full treatment in as little as five minutes. That makes it much easier to stay consistent—which is where you’ll see the greatest long-term benefits.

Patience Pays Off
Light therapy isn’t a quick fix—and that’s actually one of the things I love about it.
Rather than forcing dramatic changes, it works by supporting your skin’s natural ability to repair and regenerate itself. That means results often develop gradually over weeks or months of consistent use.
Think of light therapy like exercise. One workout won’t transform your body, but consistent workouts over time absolutely will. The same is true for your skin.
The Bottom Line
Light therapy is one of my favorite tools because it’s gentle, evidence-based, and works beautifully alongside a healthy skincare routine.
Whether your goal is reducing inflammation, improving acne, supporting collagen production, or simply maintaining healthy skin, the right light therapy can be a valuable addition to your routine.
As with many things in skincare, consistency matters more than perfection. Small treatments performed regularly often produce better long-term results than occasional intensive treatments.
If you’re curious whether light therapy is right for you—or if you’d like recommendations on a quality home device—I’d be happy to help.
GloWild Tip of the Week
Think of light therapy as a long-term investment in your skin, not a quick fix. Consistency is where the magic happens. Even just a few sessions each week can help support healthier skin over time.
Healthy skin starts from within. Thanks for letting GloWild be part of your journey.
