Cooler Weather, Drier Skin: Is Your Skin Ready?
As the seasons change, so do your skin’s needs!
We’re entering the time of year when our skin starts feeling the effects of cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and indoor heating. While turning on the heat keeps us cozy, it also dries out the air, making it harder for our skin to retain moisture.
The result? Dryness, tightness, flaking, itching, and a weakened skin barrier.
Dry Skin Is More Than Just a Cosmetic Concern
Did you know that when your skin becomes excessively dry, it can develop microscopic cracks?
These tiny disruptions compromise your skin’s protective barrier, making it easier for irritants, allergens, and certain microorganisms to penetrate the skin. This can lead to increased sensitivity, inflammation, and flare-ups of conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
Your skin barrier is your body’s first line of defense, and keeping it moisturized is one of the simplest ways to protect it!
The Best Time to Moisturize? While Your Skin Is Still Damp!
One of my favorite skincare tips is also one of the easiest!
After showering or bathing, gently pat your skin with a towel, leaving it slightly damp, and immediately apply moisturizer.
Here’s why it works:
Locks in hydration: Moisturizer helps reduce water evaporation from the skin.
Supports your skin barrier: Ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and fatty acids help maintain healthy, resilient skin.
Prevents dryness: Consistent moisturizing helps minimize tightness, itching, and flaking.
Don’t Forget the Kids!
Children’s skin can be especially prone to dryness during the colder months.
Make it a habit to moisturize your little ones immediately after every bath, while their skin is still slightly damp. A gentle, fragrance-free cream can make a big difference in preventing dry, itchy skin and helping manage eczema-prone skin.
A Few Simple Habits for Healthier Winter Skin
Keep showers and baths warm, not hot.
Apply moisturizer after every shower or bath, ideally within a few minutes.
Switch to a richer cream if your summer lotion isn’t cutting it.
Consider using a humidifier when your heat is running.
Don’t forget your hands! Frequent washing and cold weather can take a toll.
